A Beautiful Surprise Proposal
October 30th, and Madison was holding on to the last of its beautiful fall colors. It was a quiet, gray evening at Olin Park, but across Lake Monona, the downtown Madison skyline was beginning to glow. The Wisconsin State Capitol stood out against the soft evening sky, creating such a beautiful backdrop for this surprise proposal.
I was tucked away up the hill with my 85mm lens, giving the couple plenty of space while keeping the perfect view of the moment. The park was peaceful, and the proposal unfolded slowly. It was romantic, sweet, and completely unhurried. She was genuinely surprised, and watching her reaction was so special.
And the surprise wasn't quite over! Their family had been hiding nearby, waiting to come out and celebrate with them after the proposal.
Fall Colors and Capitol Skyline Views
One of my favorite things about Olin Park is the combination of its incredible Madison skyline views and beautiful, mature trees. I I think it’s the best place in the city to photograph the Capitol and skyline across Lake Monona, but there's so much more to the park than the overlook itself.
After the proposal, we wandered through the park for a few portraits. The trees were still full of deep reds, golden yellows, and warm autumn colors, even this late in October. We photographed beneath the sprawling branches, walked along the leaf-covered paths, and returned to the lake for a few final images as the city lights began to come on.
Even without sunshine, the soft evening light, fall colors, and glowing skyline made this one of those beautifully atmospheric Madison evenings.
