7 Best Locations for Madison Engagement Photos

A Local Photographer’s
Top Picks

One of the best things about taking engagement photos in Madison is how many completely different settings we have within and just outside the city. You can wander through flower-filled gardens, walk along the lake, disappear into the woods, explore prairie trails, or even spend part of your session downtown with the Capitol in the background.

The location you choose helps shape the entire feel of your engagement photos. Some couples want something romantic and polished, while others want to spend their session walking through the woods, exploring along the water, or simply finding somewhere that feels quiet and natural.

After photographing couples throughout the Madison area, these are 7 of my favorite locations for engagement photos. I’ve photographed couples at every one of them, so throughout this guide you'll see examples of what a session can actually look and feel like at each location.

1. Olbrich Botanical Gardens

Couple sitting together beside a garden pond surrounded by lush greenery at Olbrich Botanical Gardens in Madison, Wisconsin.

Feel: Lush, romantic & garden-filled

Olbrich Botanical Gardens is one of my favorite choices for couples who want lots of greenery, flowers, and variety without needing to cover a huge amount of ground.

The gardens give us so many different little environments to work with—from winding paths and dense foliage to ponds, architectural elements, and tucked-away corners that can feel surprisingly intimate in photos.

The gardens naturally change throughout the growing season, so no two sessions here look exactly the same.

2. UW–Madison Arboretum

Couple dancing together through a wooded trail at the UW–Madison Arboretum during their engagement session.

Feel: Natural, expansive & peaceful

If you want nature without traveling outside Madison, the UW Arboretum gives us an incredible amount of space to explore.

Depending on where we go, we can photograph among tall prairie grasses, beneath mature trees, along wooded paths, or in more open landscapes. That variety makes the Arboretum especially nice for couples who want their session to feel very natural without committing to just one type of scenery.

3. Olin Park

Couple embracing beside Lake Monona at Olin Park during their Madison engagement session.

Feel: Lakeside, scenic & distinctly Madison

Olin Park is my favorite option when couples want nature and water while still keeping a connection to the city.

The park has a large grassy hill leading toward Lake Monona, mature trees, shoreline areas, and views across the water toward downtown Madison and the Capitol. There are also trails that allow us to move away from the more open park areas and create a completely different feel within the same session.

I love the combination here: your photos can feel natural and outdoorsy while still having a subtle sense of place that makes them unmistakably Madison.

4. Indian Lake County Park (15 min from Madison)

Couple embracing among wildflowers beside the lake at Indian Lake County Park near Madison, Wisconsin.

Feel: Wild, natural & tucked-away.

Indian Lake County Park is a lovely little escape just outside of Madison. It's close enough that you don't have to travel far, but once you're there, it feels like you've left the city behind—which makes it a great choice if you want your engagement session to feel like a little evening away together.

There's a surprising amount of variety within the park, with lake views, tall grasses and wildflowers, wooded trails, and huge mature trees. We can wander through several different landscapes during one session without needing to drive from spot to spot.

It's a beautiful option if you love the idea of being somewhere quiet and surrounded by nature, while still staying close to Madison.

5. Wisconsin State Capitol & Capitol Square

Couple sitting together on the steps of the Wisconsin State Capitol during an engagement session in downtown Madison, Wisconsin.

Feel: Urban, architectural & classic Madison

Not every engagement session needs to happen in a field or the woods.

The Wisconsin State Capitol and surrounding Capitol Square offer something completely different from the other locations on this list. The architecture, stone, steps, city streets, and downtown surroundings create a more polished, urban feel while still being distinctly Madison.

It can be fun for couples who love downtown Madison and want their photos to reflect a place that's actually part of their lives together.

6. Tenney Park

Couple embracing beside a stone bridge during an engagement session at Tenney Park in Madison, Wisconsin.

Feel: Lakeside, relaxed & romantic

Tenney Park packs a surprising amount of variety into one relatively easy location.

There are stone bridges, the lagoon, paths, greenery, and access to the Lake Mendota shoreline. We can move through several different settings during a session without needing to hike or walk far.

The water and bridges give Tenney a little more structure and character than a completely natural setting while still keeping the overall feeling relaxed and outdoorsy.

7. Picnic Point

Couple sitting together along the lakeshore during an engagement session at Picnic Point in Madison, Wisconsin.

Feel: On the water, woodsy & adventurous

Picnic Point feels less like arriving at a photo location and more like going somewhere together.

The wooded trail extends along Lake Mendota, with little shoreline areas and places to stop along the way before eventually reaching the end of the peninsula. That makes the walk itself part of the session.

I love Picnic Point for couples who want movement and variety. We can photograph along the wooded trail, step down toward the water, use sandy shoreline areas and continue toward the point for wider lake views including a view of the capital.

Which Madison Engagement Photo Location Is Right for You?

You don't need to choose a location simply because it's the most popular or because you've seen other engagement photos there.

Think instead about how you want your session to feel.

If you love flowers, lush greenery, and a more romantic setting, Olbrich Botanical Gardens might immediately feel right. If you'd rather wander through prairie or woods, the Arboretum or Indian Lake might be a better fit. For water, Tenney, Olin, and Picnic Point each offer a completely different kind of lakeside experience. And if nature isn't really your thing, Capitol Square gives us an entirely different direction.

The location is really just the starting point. What matters most is choosing somewhere that gives us space to create photographs that feel like the two of you.
