Not every elopement needs an elaborate timeline or a full day of plans. Sometimes a simple ceremony with the people closest to you, followed by time together somewhere beautiful, is exactly enough.
For this Madison elopement, I spent about three hours with the couple—starting with their intimate ceremony at a quiet Madison park and ending with portraits at Olbrich Botanical Gardens.
A Simple Outdoor Ceremony in Madison
Their ceremony took place over Labor Day weekend, with peaceful, cloudy skies and warm late-summer weather. Their immediate family gathered beneath the trees as they exchanged vows, keeping the ceremony small, relaxed, and centered around the reason everyone was there in the first place.
There wasn't a long list of events or an elaborate setup. It was simply their closest people gathered together to watch them get married.
And for some couples, that's exactly what an elopement or intimate wedding looks like.
A few hours of photography can be enough to document the parts of the day that matter most—the people who were there, the ceremony itself, and some time afterward to slow down and create portraits together—without turning the day into an all-day production.
Elopement Photos at Olbrich Botanical Gardens
After the ceremony, their family headed out and the three of us made our way to Olbrich Botanical Gardens for their newlywed portraits.
By Labor Day, the gardens were full and lush, with layers of late-summer foliage creating completely different backdrops as we walked. Rather than staying in one area, we wandered through the gardens and let the scenery change around them.
With just the couple for this part of the day, the pace could be easy. We had time for some traditional portraits, but also plenty of room for walking, movement, quiet moments, and photographs that simply felt like the two of them.
A Three-Hour Madison Elopement
One of the things I love about smaller celebrations like this is that photography coverage can be just as simple as the day itself.
Three hours didn't mean hundreds and hundreds of photographs or documenting every part of their day. Instead, it gave them a thoughtful collection of the pieces they wanted to remember: arriving with family, their ceremony and vows, the moments immediately afterward, and portraits together at Olbrich.
For couples who don't want an entire wedding day documented, this can be a really beautiful middle ground. You still walk away with the story of the day to look back on, without feeling like you need to create more plans simply for the sake of having more to photograph.
Their day was quiet, uncomplicated, and completely enough.
