Whimsical Engagement Photos at Indian Lake County Park

A September Evening Engagement Session

When these two reached out, they knew they wanted their engagement photos to feel a little different—more whimsical, romantic, and almost storybook-like rather than a traditional engagement session. That made Indian Lake County Park such a perfect setting.

Located just outside Madison, Indian Lake has a little bit of everything I love for photos: wooded trails, huge old trees, open grassy areas, wildflowers, and views overlooking the lake. We spent a September evening wandering around the park and letting the landscape become part of the photos rather than simply using it as a backdrop.

For this session, I leaned even more into a storytelling approach—lots of movement, interaction, and quieter in-between moments. Instead of moving from one posed photo to the next, I wanted the gallery to feel like a collection of little scenes from the same evening: walking through the woods, running along the lake, dancing under the trees, lying in the grass, and simply being together.

Storytelling Engagement Photography

One of my favorite things about storytelling engagement photography is creating images that feel like pieces of an evening rather than a collection of individual poses. I’m looking for movement, connection, little details, and the quieter moments in between.

Some images are close and intimate, while others pull way back and let the couple become a small part of the landscape. Some capture movement or a tiny detail, while others feel almost like still frames pulled from a movie.

Together, those different perspectives create a gallery that feels layered and tells the story of the experience—not just what the two of you looked like, but what it felt like to be there.

And honestly, this session reminded me how much I love photographing this way.

Ending the Evening in the Woods

We ended the session tucked into the woods, and this is where the whimsical, storybook feel they had envisioned really came together. The huge old oak trees, wildflowers, and overgrown greenery created a setting that felt a little untamed and almost magical.

Rather than looking for perfectly manicured scenery, I loved letting them become part of the landscape—dancing beneath the trees, sitting among the wildflowers, and simply being together. Their white-and-black outfits stood out beautifully against all of the deep greens and textured woods, while still keeping the focus on the two of them.

It was the perfect way to end the evening, and exactly the kind of setting that made their vision for something romantic, whimsical, and a little different come to life.
