Proposal at Picnic Point on Madison’s Lake Mendota

A Surprise Proposal at Picnic Point

Picnic Point is one of my favorite places for a proposal in Madison. Located along Lake Mendota on the UW–Madison campus, the trail winds through the woods with little pockets of shoreline along the way before eventually reaching the end of the peninsula. It’s beautiful—but on a gorgeous summer evening, it can also be a pretty popular place.

For this proposal, we knew Picnic Point was the spot, but finding somewhere that felt private was important to him. Before the day, I went out to scout the trail specifically with what he was looking for in mind. I found a little tucked-away waterfront nook just off the main trail that gave us exactly what we wanted: lake views, overhanging trees, and enough separation from the trail for the actual proposal to feel intimate.

Once we had the spot, I mapped everything out for him so he knew exactly where to go and what to expect. There are already plenty of nerves involved in proposing, so my goal is always to make the logistics the easy part.

There was one other challenge: keeping the proposal a complete surprise while making sure she was dressed and ready for photos. Their dinner reservation wasn't until 7 p.m., but he needed to somehow get her dressed for dinner and out to Picnic Point by 5 without giving anything away.

And it worked perfectly.

It was Labor Day weekend and one of those beautiful late-summer Madison evenings—the kind of weather you hope for when you're planning something like this. He led her down the trail to our little waterfront spot, dropped to one knee along Lake Mendota, and she was completely surprised and delighted.

Engagement Photos Along Picnic Point

Afterward, we took our time walking farther along the trail toward the end of the peninsula for their engagement photos. One of the things I love about Picnic Point is how much variety there is without having to travel anywhere else. We went from a quiet sandy shoreline to wooded trails, rocky lakefront spots, open views across Lake Mendota, and warm evening light filtering through the trees.

By the time we reached the point, we had views stretching across the lake toward downtown Madison and the Capitol—a perfect ending to a proposal that had started in their own little private corner of the shoreline.

Picnic Point might be one of Madison's more popular trails, but with a little planning, the right timing, and some scouting, it's absolutely possible to make a proposal here feel private and completely your own.
