A Surprise Proposal at Rotary Botanical Gardens
Pulling off a truly surprise proposal takes a little planning—and this one definitely did.
From the beginning, it was important to him that she had absolutely no idea what was coming. We spent time talking through the setting, timing, and logistics and ultimately chose Rotary Botanical Gardens in Janesville, Wisconsin—a beautiful setting that he knew she would love.
The morning of the proposal, we had one more detail to work around: rain was moving in. He reached out early that morning, and we decided to move everything up so we could stay ahead of the weather. It turned out to be the perfect call.
Keeping the Proposal a Complete Surprise
We had carefully planned where the proposal would happen and how I could be nearby without giving anything away. When the moment finally came, she was completely surprised.
He proposed along the water on one of the garden’s wooden walkways, surrounded by trees, gardens, and reflections on the pond. The overcast morning gave us soft, beautiful light, and the entire setting felt quiet and intimate.
Afterward, we wandered through the gardens for a relaxed engagement session, taking advantage of the bridges, water, greenery, and all the little pockets throughout the property.
And Then This Happened…
One of my favorite photographs from the morning wasn't one we could have planned.
While photographing her new ring beside the koi pond, a bright orange koi happened to swim perfectly into the frame. Between the ring, lily pads, flowers, and fish, it became such a unique little photograph from their proposal—and one of those moments that makes every session different.
And our timing couldn't have worked out much better. The rain held off through the proposal and their entire engagement session. About 15 minutes after we finished, it finally started coming down.
